Arizona Self-Storage Law Update: Towing Option Replaces Auctions for Defaulted Vehicles

Arizona has updated its self-storage lien law, allowing facility operators to tow vehicles, watercraft, or trailers found in defaulted storage units instead of auctioning them. The provision, part of House Bill 2087 (HB2087), took effect on October 1 and simplifies the process for operators handling abandoned vehicles. The Arizona Self Storage Association (AZSSA) played a key role in advocating for the change.

New Towing Provision

Storage operators can tow vehicles, watercraft, or trailers from units in default for over 30 days instead of auctioning them.

Tenant Notification

Operators must send a 10-day notice with towing company details and a final deadline to resolve the default.

Legal Protection

Once the vehicle is removed, the operator is no longer liable to the tenant or other claimants.
