Support for Windows 7 will end January 14, 2020. What does that mean for your facility, and how can you prepare for an upgrade to Windows 10? The QuikStor Support team has gathered the questions most frequently asked by QuikStor users when it comes to the end of life for Windows 7.
Q) What does “end of life” mean?
A) When it comes to software, “end of life” is the date after which an application is no longer supported by the company that makes it. After Windows 7 end of life, you can continue to use the OS, but at your own risk. New computer viruses and other malware are developed all the time and, without the security updates to fight them off, your data and your system are vulnerable.
Q) Will I have to get a new computer?
A) This is up to you. Windows 10 may not be compatible with your current hardware. If this is the case, your IT department (or a 3rd Party IT company) can assist you in purchasing a new PC. See the graphic below for our recommended minimum specifications if you wish to take care of this yourself.
Q) How do I update my PC?
A) There was a promotional free upgrade available when Windows 10 first released, but that offer expired 7/29/2016. You can purchase and download Windows 10 on your device from Microsoft’s Website. However, they advise against installing it on a computer older than three years old.
Q) What will happen to my data?
A) If you are updating your PC to Windows 10 from Windows 7, your data should remain on your PC, but it is always recommended to backup your hard drive before this happens.
Q) If I update my PC to Windows 10, will your tech be able to remote in and make sure everything is okay?
A) Absolutely! If you are on a support plan, this will be entirely covered by the plan.
